Scientific Method Scenario

1. It is possible that the student is falling asleep in class simply because he sits in the back of the class where there might be poor ventilation for him. The warmer temperature might cause a shift of his concentration and ease him into falling asleep 15 minutes into the lecture.

2. Test:

a. I would test the hypothesis by asking the professor to arrange a seating chart where the student sits closer to the front or closer to an air vent.
b. If the student manages to stay awake throughout the lecture, my hypothesis would be supported.
c. My hypothesis would be falsified if he continued to sleep even after changing to a seat with more ventilation.

3. An untestable explanation that would not be classified as a scientific hypothesis would be that there are tiny invisible sleep fairies that pull down his eyelids until he completely falls into deep sleep during the lectures.

  1. Hello, your hypothesis is right on point. It is good to have him sit in the front because it is true that the air vent are always up front. Awesome hypothesis.

  2. Hey I found your untestable explanation to be very hilarious and creative! :D Having to move the student upfront is a good hypothesis because of what you have stated about air vents keeping the student cold and up alive! Though the student would need a sweater.

  3. Hello, I agree that moving the student to the front of the class would keep the student awake because of air ventilation. Definitely untestable if fairies made him sleep, Great job!

  4. Testable Hypothesis (5/5)- Good.

Test (5/5) - Good, though you are really testing a couple of factors hear: location and temperature and even air circulation. We can only really test one factor at a time.

Support (5/5) - Good, but which factor is the actual cause? Location, temperature, or air circulation?

Falsify (5/5) - Good. This rules all factors out.

    Untestable Hypothesis (10/10) - Good.
